I took this picture the other day at the nursery. It was planted about 12 years ago. It now has been producing seed for 4-5 years in a row. During huricane Wilma last year, I was extreamly worried that I was going to come and find it laying on the ground. But to my surprise, it withstood the high winds and only lost one leaf.

I just recently was told that they are changing the genus to Acrocomia crispa.

I'm quite surprised that a trunk that thick resisted the hurricane so well.  I assume the trunk is strong, but it is a lot of resistance to the wind and probably considerably less flexible than most slimmer trunks.

I have several of these that I germinated earlier this year. They are still in a community pot in almost full sun.I had assumed from the literature that these were very slow growing. After seeing yours I am now inspired to pot mine up to get them large enough to plant out in my garden.

Jeff, I bought one of these at your sale. Cool looking palm even when small. I do worry about the spines as it gets larger.

These palms are pretty tough. I know they will take cold down into the upper 20's F. Not sure what this is in Cel.
